Eight points regarding what has happened these last few days:
1) We tied Portland, and then followed it up with a defeat at the hands of Portland's arch-rival. Now Seattle is one-up on Portland, and has the greater bragging rights. In defeating us, Seattle did something that Portland could never do.
2) Seattle also did something that Vancouver could never do, but since Seattle's rivalry with Vancouver is more cordial and its rivalry with Portland is more nasty, it is better for Seattle (from Seattle's perspective) to be one-up on Portland than it is for Seattle to be one-up on Vancouver. Notice that this billboard does not say "Vancouver, British Columbia. Soccer City Canada 2011." It does not have a picture of a snow-covered mountain either.
3) In the aftermath of the draws in Portland and Vancouver, I wasn't sure whether to be excited that were undefeated in the Pacific Northwest, or frustrated that we were winless. Now that we are no longer undefeated, I can only be frustrated by the fact that we are winless.
4) Portland has an alliance with Chicago. It is fitting that we play Portland's biggest rivals and Portland's greatest allies back-to-back, and in that order.
5) The first local derby match in Metrostars history will occur in the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night. I hate the fact that the U.S. Open Cup is not promoted in North American to the same extent that the F.A. Cup is in England. If they would abolish the M.L.S. Cup altogether (which I am somewhat in favour of and somewhat not in favour of), then perhaps they would have an excuse to promote the U.S. Open Cup more often.
- Abolishing the M.L.S. Cup playoffs will reduce fixture congestion; furthermore, some will argue that such a tournament is not necessary, since unlike the N.B.A., M.L.S. has a balanced schedule.
- Keeping the tournament will mean that there will be three trophies that can get you into the Concacaf Champions League, instead of just two trophies.
6) Our first local derby match in franchise history will not be against Cosmos. It will be against F.C. New York. I do not want a local derby against F.C. New York. I only want a local derby against Cosmos. Metrostars is to F.C. New York as Los Angeles Galaxy is to Los Angeles Blues.
7) I hate the fact that Cosmos have not reached Major League Soccer yet. All that Paul Kemsley has demonstrated so far is his ability to run his mouth.
8) I just don't know anymore.
