Germany's Funk too much for Greece

Germany 1-0 Greece
An uncharacteristic mistake from goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino allowed Patrick Funk to get the only goal against ten-man Greece.

Patrick Funk struck from distance to give Germany a 1-0 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 1 win against Greece, who were reduced to ten men before the interval.

Georgios Georgiades's side looked to be in trouble after Kostas Triantafyllou was shown a second yellow card after 38 minutes. Goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino had pulled off some excellent saves to keep Greece in the game, but will have been disappointed by his attempt to block Funk's speculative effort just before the break. A goal and a man down, the visitors kept plugging away after the interval, but Germany had the better chances and were good value for their win, which maintains their 100% record after eight qualifiers.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen - Germany`s new goalkeeping sensation

[ the mini Kahn ;) ]

Posted Image

Over the years Germany has produced great goalkeepers in such numbers that made some other big football nations envy. One of the latest additions to this prestigious list is Marc-Andre ter Stegen , who at the age of 19 is one of the main reasons for Borussia Monchengladbach's superb 2011/12 season.

After 23 rounds Borussia is ranked 3th mainly thanks to 2nd best defense in the Bundesliga. In 23 matches ter Stegen conceded only 14 goals. Quite an accomplishment for a such a young keeper who so far had only 29 matches under his belt in one of the toughest leagues in the world.

Ter Steger joined Borrusia at the age of 4 and over the years became a prominent figure in the Club's as well as in Germany`s youth teams. In 2009 he was chosen as one of the best two goalkeepers in the U-17 European championship which his team won. He played also for Germany`s U-16, U-18 and U-19 teams, and is now a part of the U-21 team. Earlier in August he was chosen as the best German player of the year in the U-19 category by the German football federation.

It came after ter Stegen made a great impression in tough times for Burussia who fought against relegation last season. After spending most of the 2010/11 playing for Gladbach's second team and on the first team bench, he was given his Bundesliga debut on April 2011 against Cologne – and never looked back. Despite his young age, ter Stegen was one of the key figures in his team`s successful battle against relegation, conceding only 4 goals in 8 matches. A new star was born.

Strengths :

Marc-Andre ter Stegen owns superb reflexes, which are breathtaking at times, and very good aerial abilities. The 1.89 meter tall talent is excellent in one-on-one situations and a also a great athlete who uses his long arms to defend against some of the best attackers in the world. Ter Stegen also has an impressive technical ability with the ball at his feet.

Weaknesses :

If there is any weakness to point out about ter Stegen after 24 Bundesliga matches, it`s his lack of experience. But goalkeepers known to reach their peak at the ages 31-33 and even Marc-Andre's model, Oliver Kahn, arrived to the high-profiled Bayern Munchen only at 24, and so did Manuel Neuer. So when a keeper starts to shine even before the age of 20, like Iker Casillas or Gianluigi Buffon did at the time, you know he has a bright future ahead of him.

Mentality :

Nineteen maybe a young age for a footballer, but it is a whole lot younger when we talk about a goalkeeper. Ter Stegen is so composed and doesn't seem nervous at crucial moments. On the contrary, he rises when the pressure is on. Marc-Andre also gets pretty vocal organizing his defenders, who are a 30.5 year old bunch in average, which is another sign for his maturity and healthy self confidence.

If there is something that might constitute a real sign for a future star concealed in him is his body language - it's a common sight to see young Marc-Andre shouting, motivating and pushing himself and his teammates to improve constantly. With this winning attitude, as he is pushing himself to the limit while making a notable fist after has a great save, there is no wonder his childhood hero was Oliver Kahn.

Current Situation :

Ter Stegen is under contract at Borussia until the end of the 2014/15 season. At the moment, it seems as he is living the dream, representing the city he grew up in, leading the surprising team of the season in the Bundesliga, there is nothing more he could ask for right now as he is on cloud nine. In the youngster own words: "My way to the top will be long and hard. I must improve myself every day, but my goal is clear – I want to be successful and it's my time".

the problem for Hummels is , Löw is a Badstuber fan.
Badstuber is in the starting line-up 100%

Mertesacker is healthy again for the European Championship, Löw waived not of the experience *

*
World Cup: Third in 2006, third in 2010
European Championship: Finalist 2008
Confederations Cup: Third in 2005

This is very bad for Hummels

Germany has quite a bit of talent in every position. Mertesacker isn't really having the best of times with Arsenal at the moment. He has been a mixed bag for them and currently injured. You never know what can happen till the European championship.

Even though Germany have been drawn into the group of death I consider them to the favorites after Spain.

Okan Aydin - Emre Can - Samed Yeşil - all age 17

Samed Yeşil

Background and History

Born in Dusseldorf, Yesil currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen 's U-19 squad scoring 22 goals in 14 appearances at the B-Jgb. BL West and another 2 goals in 7 appearances for the A-Jgd. BL West. This Season 18 games 11 Goals.

Yesil was also the Golden Boot winner of the 2011 Under-17 European Championship, helping Germany to the tournament's final match against Holland that eventually won the championship.

Scoring so many impressive goals in such a short period has awarded Yesil to be nicknamed 'Gerd' by his colleagues- compared to the legendary Gerd Muller who scored 68 goals in 62 international matches for Germany in the 70's.

Strengths

Yesil is a player which holds the amazing ability to prove the difference in matches, able to score decisive goals when needed.

Additionally, the right-footed striker has excellent dribbling abilities and is very comfortable inside the box, whether he is facing the goal or either with his back to the goal.

A very fast player, which always knows how to find his way towards the goal, a very creative player, who can adjust himself well in counter-attack situations and create for himself as for his teammates.

Weaknesses

Yesil is not such a physical forward, lacking upper body strengths, which is something that he will need to develop in order to play at senior level, although Yesil is the kind of player that knows how to hold his ground and position himself well.

Mentality

When viewing Yesil on the field one can notice a very healthy attitude, looking fairly confident and determined, with good sportsmanship characteristics. Yesil plays very maturely for his age, a player that can be relied on by his teammates.

Draxler, Gündogan and ter Stegen called up for EURO

_____________________________

Matthias Sammer is an important part of the new generation of DFB

On 1 April 2006, he was appointed technical director of German Football Association (DFB), on a five year contract. The position is new in the DFB. It includes responsibility for the national youth teams, focusing on young talents between the ages of eleven and eighteen, as well as incorporating the latest developments in sports science into the DFB's training theories. Sammer is also expected to work on a tactical system for all of Germany's national sides in close co-operation with national coach Joachim Löw.

DFB.de: Mr. Sammer, the U-17 European Championship is starting on Friday. What are Germany’s chances at winning the tournament?

Matthias Sammer: As the German National Team, we have a responsibility to win titles and compete with the very best in the world.

DFB.de: With Iceland and Gerogia in Group A and Poland and Belgium in Group B (along with Germany, France, the Netherlands and hosts Slovenia) there are four teams that are not necessarily considered amongst the best in the world. How do you explain the absence of traditionally strong teams like England, Spain or Italy this time around?

Sammer: The qualifying process for the Youth Championship is extremely difficult. In the first qualifying round, only the top two sides move on. In the elite stage you need to win the group to o even make it to the finals. We are happy that we qualified but it is not surprising that even big teams can miss out considering the difficulty of the qualifying process.

DFB.de: You have watched this team in their successful elite round progression in Bremen. What is your impression of Stefan Böger’s team?

Sammer: We were deserved group winners and played well so far. It is a difficult process for the young players which has to be taken into account. In that sense I was very satisfied that we qualified for the EURO’s.

DFB.de: Where do you see a need for improvement?

Sammer: The long unbeaten run shows that we have enormous talent within the team. But the good performances against Turkey and the strong first half against Bulgaria alone are not enough for the EURO’s. In Slovenia we have to maintain consistency and be strong mentally throughout the tournament. If we can manage that then we are amongst the tournament favorites.

DFB.de: What exactly do you mean by mentality?

Sammer: The team has to learn to play more compact and disciplined if it can’t play their natural game. In the last elite round match against Portugal we took a step in the right direction where the team adapted well to initial difficulties which in the end was the right approach in that match.

DFB.de: How exactly can this mentality be developed?

Sammer: That in itself is a learning process. Just like different sporting sequences can be practiced so too can the mentality of a team as long as players are willing. They have to create a constructive atmosphere in all areas, whether in training, in a match or off the pitch. They should express their opinions and learn that the sporting side is just one part of the bigger picture, the other being determined by the way they carry themselves.

DFB.de: And how can you, as Sporting Director, influence this?

Sammer: That is also a process that isn’t completed overnight. I’m consistently in contact with the coaches. We are also constantly working on getting consistent performances from our teams and that we are in top condition in crucial moments, both from a sporting and mental perspective.

DFB.de: You spoke of certain “types” needed by a team. Who from the U-17 do you see as such?

Sammer: Leon Goretzka is an outstanding captain who fully embraces this role. In defense, Niklas Süle and Marian Saar exert a great influence and confidence. Goalkeeper Oliver Schnitzler and fullback Pascal Itter are also very responsible mature players.

DFB.de: The U-19 team has also qualified for the elite round, which will be played out at the end of May. And even those sides not competing in tournaments like the U-20, U-18, U-16 and U-15 are winning most of their matches. How satisfied are you with the standard of performances from the youth teams?

Sammer: We manage to achieve our own mission targets in most of the matches we play. So our goal in the coming year is also to win titles therefore we provide our coaches, Stefan Böger and Horst Hrubesch for example, with all the necessary support for qualifying and the final round. The same goes for the other performers I have observed which all show a lot of potential. We have come a long way since 2006 and it is important that we remain hungry and improve further.

DFB.de: Is the DFB-Performance Center, that is currently being discussed, the next step in this process?

Sammer: Definitely, yes. National Team manager Oliver Bierhoff has raised this issue in recent discussions. A central performance center has great advantages, namely the concentration of all efforts at one point. That said, one cannot ignore the reservations that exist about the idea, and those reservations have to be discussed thoroughly.

DFB.de: Your goal has always been to be the best in the world, currently symbolized by the teams from Spain, who are winning every title. You said that it is about time to officially “phase out” Spain as the model to follow. Why?

Sammer: Well, of course they are still very good (laughs). By that I meant that we should not model ourselves only around Spain. We need our own identity and have developed our football accordingly. Over the past decade, the gap between us and the world’s best has become considerably smaller.

DFB.de: Is FC Bayern’s progress to the Champions League further proof of this development?

Sammer: The fact that Bayern reached the final in their own stadium is a great sign for the club – but also for German football as a whole. Particularly notable is the fact that ten German National Team players were on the field in the semi final.

DFB.de: Is the impression correct that the major figures of the DFB are very close to each other?

Sammer: We were never far apart. Jogi and I are very success oriented people. There are some issues on which we disagree but we always have discussions that are goal oriented and meant to bring the best to German football.

DFB.de: Does this mean that 2012 will be a return to international trophies?

Sammer: That must be our goal. Just as important for me though is a continually productive climate for youth development. That is going to be determined by people who share our philosophy, starting with our President Wolfgang Nierschbach, Treasurer Horst R. Schmidt and Secretary General Helmut Sandrock, but also the DFL, the clubs’ youth academies and all those who work there. They all helped plant the seeds at the beginning of the millenium under Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder with the talent development program and helped promote it later under Dr. Theo Zwanziger.

Germany 1-1 Netherlands (Netherlands win 5-4 on pens)

Elton Acolatse hit an added-time equaliser for the Dutch, who then held their nerve in the shoot-out to win their second successive Under-17 title.

A dramatic penalty shoot-out win earned the Netherlands their second successive UEFA European Under-17 Championship title.

Captain Leon Goretzka's header looked set to have given a Germany a deserved win, but a dramatic added-time equaliser from Elton Acolatse took the game to penalties, where Nick Olij saved the crucial spot kick to become the hero for the Jong Oranje.

Despite temperatures dropping to an unusual low for May in Ljubljana, the impressive stadium welcomed an 11,674-strong crowd – the third highest attendance for an U17 final tournament match after the 2009 and 2004 finals, and the highest ever for a match not involving the hosts.

It took some time for the capacity crowd to witness a threat from either side in attack, however. Solid defensive performances have been the foundation for the success of both of these sides in this tournament – Germany had not conceded prior to the final, while the Netherlands had been breached just once. It was no surprise to see these assured back lines on top in a tight first half.

Indeed, it took until 23 minutes for the first real effort on goal. Timo Werner, starting his first game of the tournament in place of the unfortunate Said Benkarit, collected the ball on the edge of the area and curled a right-footed shot around his marker that beat the full-length dive of Olij, but clipped the top of the bar.

Three minutes from the break, the Netherlands surged forward, winning a corner when Pascal Itter's touch sent Rai Vloet's shot into the side netting, and then almost profiting but for some desperate German defending.

If that was close, only a matter of centimetres denied them a lead moments later. Tonny Trindade de Vilhena threaded a perfect pass through the German rearguard for Queensy Menig, whose drive cracked off the underside of the bar, the ball bouncing on the line and away.

An attacking second half stood in stark contrast to the first, and an early goal was the catalyst, as Goretzka rose to head his team into a 45th-minute lead from half-time substitute Marc Stendera's corner. Stendera almost set up a second six minutes later, but Niklas Süle could not keep down his thunderous header from another superb corner.

Stendera and Nico Brandenburger both saw efforts flash wide of the left post as a confident Germany dominated proceedings, their dynamic front line stretching the Dutch defence. But Olij was on hand to deny a powerful long-range strike from Goretzka.

The game looked to be done and dusted, but as it moved into added time, Germany switched off for a Thom Haye cross. Branco van den Boomen flicked the ball on and Acolatse snatched an equaliser, controlling the loose ball at the back post and volleying in to send the game to penalties. Stendera missed the crucial spot kick, and the Netherlands were champions.

Meanwhile, the success of the U17 is also perceived the media more and more. Here, the force of Stefan Boeger is already hyped up about the team, sometimes referred to as the best year ever. Is it really?

In spite of the sovereign group victory, despite the dominant role that they took it, and despite the impressive series that plays this U17 for a long time, I still feel that she is playing is not quite as strong as their predecessors from the past year. For this year is much more than a really husky defensive, because especially the defense and midfield are very strong in this discipline, and an enormously effective, direct, straightforward, functional and powerful offensive with the outstanding and crucial task of Max Meyer as the primary creative element that holds together his teammates. Moreover, because all players act also technically and playful at a high level, it is these aforementioned elements that make up the particular and the overall strength of these well-trained crew. Therefore, one could in the symbiosis may indeed be one of the best vintages ever, even with the security yielding some interesting player.

Is a start, it still to this tournament: In the semifinals they will now face Poland in a possible final, it could be a reunion with the Georgians or the new edition of last year's duel with the Netherlands - in those two games, the DFB-team her reputation are just two more times.
